Colours with A Purpose

In August, 2019, Garbage free India launched its flagship school based program ‘Colours with a Purpose’ in Kolkata at Purushottam Bhagchandka Academic School.

The program stems from a belief that nature is losing its colours due to our irresponsible resource use and “consume and throw” culture. There was thus an urgency in bringing back nature's vibrant palette. In solid waste management, colour also plays a key role in segregating garbage at source for ethical last mile disposal. 'Colours with a Purpose' was thus born to convey the power of colour – in reviving and uplifting our physical lives and as a strategic tool to manage and preserve our planet’s resources.

Our primary target for the program is school children - future leaders of change and custodians of tomorrow’s world. The program is designed to empower children through knowledge and action based programs. It has now metamorphosed into a school and community program. It aims to help every school and community we work with, to send zero waste to landfills through ‘Bank It Don’t Bin It’ – our dry waste program and ‘Grow It Don’t Throw It’- our wet waste program

In 'Bank It, Don't Bin It' we set up recycling banks for dry waste including low-value plastic. In ‘Grow It, Don’t Throw It’ we set up a composting or bio-fuel facility. Based on where the schools or communities are in their waste management journey, they can choose one or both of these programs.
